EAST STOKE, EASTOKE in Hayling Island
Apparently Old English 'east tree stump', ie: east in South Hayling. But it must early have been taken for hypothetical 'Eaststoc'='east grange farm' rather than 'stocc' if the record and the present form are to be trusted, distinguishing it from 'Stoke' in North Hayling, a genuine 'stoc' -name (1327 'Stoke'). But it is scarcely east of that Stoke.
